As preschool educators, one of our goals is to foster independence, confidence, and a strong connection to one’s own body. In our classroom, we practice intuitive eating, recognizing that every child operates on a unique schedule.

Instead of structured mealtimes where all children are required to eat at the same time, we encourage students to listen to their hunger cues and eat when they feel hungry. While this may take some time for children to adjust to, they quickly learn to take charge of their own needs, making choices that support their individual growth and well-being.

We provide designated eating areas both in our classroom and our out door playground, including picnic tables, rugs and even spaces within the gym. Whether sitting at a table or comfortably on the floor, children are free to enjoy their meals where they feel most comfortable. This flexibility allows them to develop a sense of responsibility and community, as snack and mealtime become opportunities not only to nourish their bodies but also to engage socially sharing stories, making connections, and learning from one another.

Without a rigid lunchtime, children eat as often as they need, for as long as they need. This approach helps them build a positive relationship with food and their own hunger signals, supporting their ability to self-regulate a skill that will benefit them throughout their lives. By allowing children to make these choices, we empower them to trust their own bodies while fostering a classroom environment that respects individual needs.
