In our unique preschool setting inside a large gymnastics facility, movement and active play are an essential part of each day. Recently, our classroom community took on an exciting challenge we decided to work together to build what might be the largest obstacle course ever!

The project began with a brainstorming session where the children shared ideas about what makes an obstacle course fun and challenging. With a plan in place, the real work began. The students collaborated to haul large, heavy mats, barrels, and other gym equipment across the gym to our purple floor. For nearly 45 minutes, they pushed, pulled, lifted, and adjusted until their vision became a reality.

Once the course was complete, the real fun began; testing it out! As the children moved through their creation, they quickly discovered areas that needed improvement. Together, they adjusted, fixed, and adapted the course, refining their work through trial and error. Every child played a part in the process, contributing ideas and physical effort to reach a shared goal. Designing and adjusting the obstacle course required problem-solving, spatial awareness, and planning. Lifting and moving equipment strengthened gross motor skills, while navigating the course built balance and coordination. The project wasn’t easy, but the students showed resilience and pride as they tackled each challenge.

By working together toward a common goal, the students not only built an obstacle course they built confidence, cooperation, and a sense of accomplishment. This experience reflects our belief that children thrive when given the opportunity to plan, create, and problem-solve in a collaborative environment.
